2. What actually goes wrong with chimneys out here?

   Corrosion, almost every time. Full ocean exposure and daily marine layer mean the metal parts fail first: chimney caps rusting out, chase covers thinning and pooling water, spark screens disintegrating, and top plates on prefab systems staining and streaking down the stucco. The flue liner itself is often in decent shape because these fireplaces see so little use. The second thing we find constantly is birds' nests and blown-in debris, because a rusted-out or missing cap leaves the top wide open and nobody notices when the fireplace goes unused for a year or two.

3. Can you come out the same day?

   Sometimes, and it depends on base access as much as our schedule.
