Why your gas fireplace won't stay lit

The pilot lights, then drops when you release the knob. That is usually a millivolt problem. A thermocouple or thermopile weakens with age and stops generating enough signal to hold the gas valve open. Sometimes the pilot hood is partly blocked. Small spiders spin webs inside pilot orifices on fireplaces that sit unused from spring through fall, and the flame goes lazy and yellow instead of crisp and blue. We test the millivolt output before replacing anything.

Coastal air changes the picture here. Salt reaches burner ports and igniter electrodes. It also corrodes stainless vent terminations, and rust shows up on parts that would still be clean inland. On direct-vent units, check the glass gasket. If it has hardened or pulled loose, the sealed chamber no longer draws correctly and soot builds on the glass and log tops.

Prefab fireboxes from 1980s–2000s tract housing bring their own faults. Cracked refractory panels are common. So are rusted-through chase covers that drip water down the flue onto the valve and controls.

Gas log sets in open masonry fireplaces are different again. The damper must be clamped permanently open. We see clamps missing or the damper only partly open, which spills combustion products into the room.
