1. I only light a fire a handful of nights in December and January — does my chimney still need sweeping?

   Yes, though probably not for the reason you're thinking. In Carlsbad the bigger issue usually isn't creosote volume, it's what moves into a flue that sits idle nine months of the year. Birds, wasps and rodents treat an unused chimney as a sheltered cavity, and nesting material packed above the damper is a real blockage on the first cold evening you light up. 2. What fails most often on Carlsbad chimneys?

   Metal, and it's the ocean's fault. Second most common: flashing at tile-roof penetrations after a winter storm season.

3. How soon can you get out here?

   It swings hard with the calendar. From roughly September through the first real cold snap, everyone in North County books at once and you may wait a week or more. Spring and summer we're usually out within a couple of days, which is honestly the smarter time to schedule since a rusted chase cover or bad flashing is better found in June than discovered mid-storm. After a heavy Pacific storm we also get a wave of leak calls, and those tend to push routine sweeps back a bit.

4. Can you do a same-day sweep?

   Sometimes, outside of the fall rush, and it depends where you are and what the job turns out to be. A straightforward sweep and inspection is a same-visit job. What can't be same-day is fabrication work: if your chase cover has rusted through or the cap needs replacing, that's measured on the first visit and installed on a second, because a stainless cover for a stucco chase gets made to your dimensions. Roof work on tile also gets scheduled separately, since walking tile safely takes setup and dry conditions.
