Why relining comes up so often here

Clay tile flue liners in pre-1970s Carlsbad masonry crack from heat shock, settling, and years of water entry through a failed crown. Glazed creosote finishes them. Wood stored outside near the coast never really dries, so it burns cool and smoky, and hard glaze bonds to tile joints that have already opened. Salt air corrodes the top few feet first. Sweeping does not restore a cracked liner.

The install starts with a camera scan and an inside measurement of the tile, because the liner has to match the appliance outlet, not the chimney. Flexible 316Ti stainless holds up better than 304 in coastal air. An ovalized liner will pass tight offsets; sometimes tiles have to be broken out from the top instead. Then insulation wrap or poured fill, a tee at the thimble, top plate, storm collar, clamps.

Prefab metal fireplaces in stucco chases are a different animal. Those are listed systems. You do not drop a liner down double- or triple-wall pipe. You replace matching sections and cracked refractory panels. The water almost always came from a rusted-through chase cover or a missing rain cap.

Gas inserts and log sets in a big open masonry flue need a correctly sized liner too. Oversized flues cool the gases, condense, and spill into the room, especially with a damper clamped wrong.
