1. We only use the fireplace on cold nights in winter — does it really need sweeping every year?

   Poway sits well inland. Winter nights here get colder than they do closer to the coast, with occasional frost. Most homes here burn more often and for longer stretches than coastal North County houses, and creosote builds accordingly. A once-a-year inspection makes sense even for a "weekends only" fireplace. If we open it up and there's little to remove, we'll tell you that. We'll note where you stand for next season instead of pushing work you don't need.

2. What actually fails on Poway chimneys?

   Two patterns dominate. They split along how the house was built. On the 1970s–1990s tract homes with prefab metal chimneys, it's the chase cover and cap up top. Years of direct sun and heat degrade the sealant and the cover itself, rust starts at the low spots, and water finds its way down the chase. On the custom masonry fireplaces, we more often find crown cracking, deteriorated mortar joints, and damper hardware seized from long idle summers. Salt corrosion isn't a factor here the way it is nearer the ocean. Heat and UV are what age things.

3. I'm on a brush-adjacent lot in north Poway. Will you check the spark arrestor?

   Yes, and it's a standard part of the visit here, not an add-on. On the larger semi-rural lots in the northern and eastern parts of town, the screen keeps embers from leaving the flue. We check that the mesh is intact, not rusted through, not clogged with soot or debris, and secured to the cap. Clogged arrestors are common because they do their job and then nobody looks at them for a decade. If the screen is compromised we'll show you a photo of it before recommending anything.

4. How soon can you get out to Poway?

   Poway is a straightforward run for us, just east of I-15, so scheduling is usually within a few days outside of peak season. The catch is the season itself: once the first genuinely cold nights arrive, everyone in the inland valleys remembers their fireplace at the same time and the calendar fills. If you can book in late summer or early fall, you'll get a wider choice of times. The larger properties in the north and east sometimes need a longer appointment window, since roof access on those homes takes more setup.
